February 3 Meditation (Quinn Crossley)

I am not trans, so my opinion surely has little relevance, but I liked this little game about transitioning.

One thing I liked about Quinn Crossley’s Meditation is that – while it’s obviously good to include a link to resources about being transgender – you don’t need to read the intro to understand what it’s about. It’s loaded with clear symbols: gendered colours and icons and body types.

The protagonist walks through pink rooms, blowing out candles while a music box version of Happy Birthday plays, looking into mirrors that reply with the symbol for female. I like that you have to blow out all the candles to proceed, since it forces you to stay longer in each room and is also symbolic. Next there are dark, colourless rooms, one of which cannot be surpassed without smashing those mirrors. Music returns in the blue rooms, with more candles, and mirrors that reply with the symbol for male. And finally, a birthday cake, and a gathering of friends.
