It’s a small thing, but I like that somebody made a game about Amelia Earhart that isn’t about her disappearance.
As the creators write, Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set off for that flight 87 years ago yesterday, May 20th 1932. In today’s Meditation you play through her landing, on farmland. In the game the farmer, who appears briefly in the corner of the screen, seems quite cross (although by all accounts the people who lived on the farm where actually quite thrilled to see her). You fly a bright red plane heading towards a farm. Rings of yellow triangles hang in the sky before you, and you can nudge the plane up or down with the arrow keys (or WASD) to fly it through them for a satisfying ching.
You can also, I only realised on a second or third play through, steer the plane left or right, though doing so will only take you further from the rings, which are all lined up in the middle of your path to the farm. You can even bypass the farm entirely, continuing to fly off into the horizon or maybe even looping around back on yourself to take on those rings again, or even swerve to the side to land among the crops.
It’s playful and joyful, which feels right for a game about someone at the forefront of human flight.
