June 18 Meditation (Joe Bain)

I’m going on my first real holiday later this year.

I definitely went on a few staycations as a kid, holing up in some holiday park with my many younger siblings doing child-friendly activities. And as an adult I’ve travelled abroad, but only for work, for games festivals like A MAZE and Lyst. But later this year I’m going to a different country, for a week, to… enjoy myself? I really don’t know what to expect. I’m a little out of my depth, and entirely relying on other people to make the plans. I do know that we’re hiring a car. Maybe we’ll get lost and won’t mind, like in today’s Meditation.

This game is joyful, and not just because of the cheery tune that plays throughout. You have a top-down view of a little red car that you drive – with the arrow keys – around a pink environment. After a short while, cacti begin to pop up either side of the car as you drive, with an audible pop and with clouds of dust blowing away from where they settle. Further in, the cacti stop appearing, and you miss them, but then you start to come across strange large grey cylinders. At first I thought they were like the wrapped hay bales you see in fields, but then I nudged one, and it began to unfurl. It’s a road! You’re laying your own road! And then, once you’ve laid some road, houses begin to appear, popping into being just like the cacti, either side of your road! And finally, though you could have played for longer, you come across a castle, and you drive inside. A wonderful journey, and a wonderful destination.
